Heaptalk, Jakarta — Brazil, the chair of BRICS 2025, announced the full membership of Indonesia in the organization, as announced by Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (01/07). This reflects Indonesia’s active role in global issues.
With full membership status, Indonesia aims to strengthen multilateral cooperation to realize a more inclusive and just global order. “Indonesia views its membership in BRICS as a strategic step to enhance cooperation with other developing countries, based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on its official page.
With a growing and diverse economy, Indonesia wants to actively contribute to the organization’s agenda, including promoting economic resilience, technological cooperation, sustainable development, and addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and public health.
Voicing Global South countries
The Ministry added, “BRICS is an essential forum for Indonesia to strengthen South-South cooperation, ensuring the voices and aspirations of Global South countries are heard and represented in global decision-making processes. We are fully dedicated to working with all BRICS members and other parties to create a just, peaceful, and prosperous world.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia also expressed appreciation to Russia, the BRICS chair for 2024, for its support and leadership in facilitating Indonesia’s entry into the bloc, and to Brazil, the BRICS chair for 2025, for announcing Indonesia’s membership.
According to the Ministry, this membership results from Indonesia’s active engagement with the organization over the past few years, including attending the BRICS Summits in Johannesburg in 2023 under South Africa’s chairmanship and Kazan in 2024 under Russia’s chairmanship.
