Heaptalk, Jakarta — Apple representatives, the manufacturer of the iPhone 16, met with Ministry of Industry representatives on Tuesday (01/07) at the Ministry’s office in South Jakarta. The meeting discussed the Cupertino-based tech giant’s proposal to meet domestic content levels (TKDN) regulations to decide the iPhone 16’s fate.
Setia Diarta, Director General of Metals, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics (ILMATE), revealed that the meeting with Apple discussed the proposal submitted on Monday (01/06). The Ministry provided feedback on several points raised by Apple. “We received their proposal for extending domestic content levels and have given a counter-proposal. They are considering it for further study,” Setia said Tuesday (01/07) in South Jakarta.
However, Setia could not confirm the iPhone 16’s fate in Indonesia, including when it can be officially marketed, as no agreement was reached during the meeting. He said, “As previously mentioned by the Minister, this will not be a one-hour or one-day meeting. It can be either one month or one week. This will be a process, so it is still ongoing.”
He further also mentioned that yesterday’s meeting did not only discuss the previously rumored $1 billion or Rp16 trillion investment proposal but also Apple’s efforts to meet the requirements of Ministry of Industry Regulation No. 29 of 2017 on the Calculation of Domestic Content Levels for Mobile Phones, Handheld Computers, and Tablet Computers. Setia added, “These are different, two separate issues. The investment is different, and it will be separate. The proposal we discussed was only the domestic content level issue.”
The meeting between Apple and the Ministry of Industry did not discuss the issue of a factory, and no follow-up meeting was scheduled. “We don’t know yet; there isn’t one. The important thing is that negotiations are ongoing, and they are studying it,” Setia concluded.
