Heaptalk, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo recently announced a potential temporary halt to large-scale infrastructure projects, including dam construction and similar initiatives.
“In several discussions, I have stated that major physical developments, like building dams, might be paused temporarily,” Dody remarked.
Responding to this, State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Minister Erick Thohir clarified that the government is not halting infrastructure development but rather conducting a review of specific large-scale projects, including those led by SOE construction companies (BUMN Karya).
“No, there’s no decision to stop projects. Based on the meeting chaired by Mr. Prabowo and attended by Vice President Gibran, all infrastructure projects are under review,” Erick stated during a recent press briefing in Jakarta.
He emphasized that crucial government-assigned projects will continue until completion. “Ongoing assignments must be finished,” the SOE Minister affirmed.
On the other hand, Erick acknowledged that some projects might require reassessment or temporary suspension, which he views as usual. He also highlighted that many BUMN Karya projects are independent of government funding.
“Not all projects come from the government. BUMN Karya also undertakes various independent initiatives, so it’s not entirely reliant on state programs,” Erick concluded.
This approach ensures efficiency and prioritizes strategic infrastructure development amidst ongoing reviews.
