Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs will continue implementing multiple measures to make Indonesia ASEAN’s premier digital ecosystem hub by renewing its strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Set initially from 2022 to 2024, the agreement has been extended to meet the demands of digital transformation and the growing need for national digital talent.
“We value AWS’s ongoing support and recognize Indonesia as a strategic market with immense potential far exceeding that of other ASEAN countries. Therefore, we are urging AWS to expand its investment in Indonesia to ensure growth that reflects our capabilities,” stated Meutya Hafid, the Minister of Communication and Digital, during discussions with AWS Asia Pacific executives at the Ministry’s headquarters. Minister Hafid highlighted the anticipated surge in Indonesia’s data center capacity, which is expected to increase by 260% in the next few years, presenting a significant opportunity for this company to scale up its investments. Since 2021, AWS has committed USD5 billion to Indonesia, a figure projected to rise in line with the country’s digital economy expansion.
“Indonesia stands out as both a significant and strategic market. Our advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure are too significant to overlook. I encourage AWS to reallocate a greater share of its ASEAN investments towards Indonesia,” Meutya emphasized.
In response, Quint Simon, Head of Public Policy for AWS Asia Pacific & Japan, affirmed that Indonesia’s USD5 billion investment marks AWS’s most substantial global commitment. “We are establishing a full AWS region in Indonesia, with a 15-year investment plan from 2021 to 2036. This reflects our prioritization of Indonesia,”
AWS remains committed to supporting Indonesia’s digital talent pool through cloud computing training and certification programs. These efforts are designed to cultivate a workforce equipped to thrive in the global digital marketplace.
With Southeast Asia’s largest digital economy, Indonesia is forecasted to achieve a digital economy valuation of USD130 billion by 2025. Minister Meutya stressed that the partnership with AWS transcends financial investment, aiming to position Indonesia as a leader in ASEAN’s digital transformation.
“Now is Indonesia’s time to assert its leadership. We will continue to urge global players like AWS to maximize their contributions, ensuring Indonesia emerges as the dominant digital force in the region,” Meutya concluded.
