Indonesia’s aquaculture DELOS closes Series A funding round

DELOS has produced and distributed thousands of tons of shrimp annually and has integrated its supply into the US$300 billion global seafood market.

Heaptalk, Jakarta — An aquaculture-tech startup based in Indonesia, DELOS, has seized undisclosed funding in a Series A round from Southeast Asia’s venture capital Monk’s Hill Ventures.

In its plan, DELOS’ new funding will be allocated to enhance the full-stack pond management system AquaHero through research and development of features to decrease production costs, which entails better disease monitoring, water quality management, feed conversion rations, and yields. On the other hand, the startup will expand its business in the farming-as-a-service segment by operating an integrated and environmentally friendly supply chain.

The AquaHero product utilizes top-class data collection methods and a cutting-edge biological model to predict and mitigate harvest risk, a model that will be trained on hundreds of shrimp ponds within the DELOS ecosystem across Indonesia. This product, combined with the necessary technology stack and operational expertise, will increase farm productivity for Indonesia’s aquaculture industry.

According to the CEO of DELOS, Guntur Mallarangeng, Indonesia’s aquaculture sector has been in sore need of an upgrade for the past few decades. An outsized portion of farming decisions are still based on gut feel and appeals to tradition instead of being driven by data and empirical farming practices.

He added, “Indonesia’s natural advantage as the world’s biggest tropical maritime country gives it all the puzzle pieces its needs to be the world’s biggest seafood producer. Improving our aquaculture industry’s adoption of best-in-class technologies and practices would help us realize its potential. This can be a highly strategic industry for Indonesia,”

Founded in 2021 by Guntur Mallarangeng, Aris Noerhadi, Alexander Farthing, and Bobby Indra Gunawan WIbisono, DELOS aims to deliver a blue revolution by boosting Indonesia’s potential to become an international aquaculture-based seafood production powerhouse within the next decade. The process will be a radical shift to drive the enhancement and modernization of the US$2.5 billion Indonesian aquaculture industry and further its integration into the global seafood supply chain.

DELOS has also launched its harvesting and logistics platform to capture traceable seafood supply downstream in the value chain AquaLink. The company also produces and distributes thousands of tons of shrimp annually and has integrated its supply into the US$300 billion global seafood market. As a result, this aquaculture-tech startup has increased its revenue up to 150-fold since the launch of the AquaLink service.

“DELOS advances the use of data science and technology in the shrimp farming industry in Indonesia. This startup has also vastly improved farm productivity with reduced input cost, enabling traceability and sustainability in farming practices. We are pleased to partner with the DELOS team to transform SEA’s strategically important aquaculture industry. This matter is a potentially highly impactful investment for us,” Monk’s Hill Ventures Co-Founder and Managing Partner Kuo-Yi Lim said.
