Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) has collaborated with Bersama Digital Data Center (BDDC) to inaugurate the Indonesia Internet Exchange Jakarta Kedua (IIX-JK2) located at BBDC’s newest data center facility, JST1, in East Jakarta, as reported by Kontan.
As an in-town carrier-neutral data center platform, BDDC manages the JST1 data center, designed as a tier IV facility with global certification from the Uptime Institute and a capacity of 5 megawatts to support 24/7 operations. The launch of this internet exchange aims to strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem by providing a more efficient, faster, and secure interconnection infrastructure. This initiative is also expected to meet the industry’s need for reliable connectivity.
IIX-JK2 is designed to complement the existing Indonesia Internet Exchange (IIX) at Cyber 1, focusing on bringing digital content providers and hyperscalers closer. This way, the industry can address previous challenges, including accessibility and the efficiency of managing the continually increasing data traffic.
Strengthening the national digital ecosystem
According to Muhammad Arif, Chairman of APJII, this internet exchange has become an urgent need as internet traffic has grown more than tenfold in the last three years, from 1.3 terabytes per second (tbps) in 2021 to 14tbps by the end of 2024 (peak traffic). “This infrastructure enables internet service providers (ISPs) to connect their traffic more efficiently, reduce latency, and support digital transformation and national data sovereignty,” Arif stated, as quoted by Kontan (01/06).
Setyono Hantoro, Chairman of BDDC, stated that the collaboration with APJII is expected to provide better interconnectivity, speeding up data distribution and strengthening the national digital ecosystem. He said, “With legal certainty, competitive electricity rates, and supporting incentives, Indonesia can become a data center investment hub in Southeast Asia.”
Close to content providers and hyperscalers, IIX-JK2 is claimed to facilitate interconnection with global content providers, such as Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and other major digital platforms such as Akamai, Tencent, and ByteDance. Additionally, all operations of IIX-JK2 are conducted in Indonesia, supporting the principle of data sovereignty according to national regulations and protecting the privacy and security of local data.
