Heaptalk, Jakarta — PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) confirmed that train tickets will remain exempt from the 12% Value-Added Tax (VAT) starting January 1, 2025.
“There’s no need for concern regarding train tickets—they will not be subject to the 12% VAT,” said Ixfan Hendriwintoko, Public Relations Manager of KAI Operational Area (Daop) 1 Jakarta, in an official statement on Sunday (December 29).
This exemption is attributed to trains’ classification as a public transportation service, free from VAT under Government Regulation (PP) No. 49 of 2022 concerning VAT Exemptions and related matters.
“This regulation is a derivative legal product of Law No. 7 of 2021 on the Harmonization of Tax Regulations (HPP),” Ixfan explained.
Ixfan also emphasized KAI’s continuous efforts to improve facilities in terms of infrastructure and equipment to enhance Indonesia’s railway services.
“KAI consistently works on upgrading facilities at stations and within train carriages to ensure passengers feel comfortable while waiting at the station and experience a pleasant, safe, and enjoyable journey,” Ixfan said.
KAI Daop 1 Jakarta has reported that over 588,000 passengers were served during the Christmas and New Year 2025 holidays from December 19, 2024, to January 5, 2025. During this period, around 296,369 seats were available, including 285,234 seats for long-distance trains and 11,135 seats for local trains.
“Today, Saturday (December 28), KAI Daop 1 Jakarta has transported 645,895 passengers, comprising 537,191 long-distance train passengers and 72,704 local train passengers,” Ixfan stated.
