Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Indonesian government is making several efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency by absorbing farmers’ rice and corn production. The Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs has set the government’s purchase price for harvested dry rice grain at Rp6,500 as of January 15, increasing from Rp6,000.
Rice mills will purchase the harvested dry grain to mill into rice, which Bulog will buy for Rp12,000. This decision follows a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto on December 30, 2024.
“Following the results of the limited meeting with the President, we held a meeting, and it was decided that due to the need for preparation, budget, and other factors, the implementation of the government’s purchase price for harvested dry grain and rice will be effective on January 15,” stated Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan in a press conference at Graha Mandiri, Central Jakarta (01/06).
Rising purchase price for farmers’ corn
In addition to rice, the government has also raised the purchase price for corn to Rp5,500, up from Rp5,000. Unlike rice grain, the new price will be effective on February 1, following the corn harvest season beginning that month.
Zulkifli said, “If it is implemented now, the concern is that the existing stock will not solve the problem. The goal is to ensure that farmers’ harvests are absorbed later. Therefore, the new corn purchase price will be effective starting February 1.”
Representatives from the Indonesian Rice Milling and Rice Entrepreneurs Association (Perpadi) and the Indonesian Corn Traders and Producers Association (Pejagindo) attended the meeting to determine the government’s purchase prices for rice and corn.
