Heaptalk, Jakarta — Bank Indonesia in collaboration with The Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs organized Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival (In2motionfest) as part of the Indonesia Sharia Economic Festival (ISEF) agenda, particularly in the fashion sector.
Partnering with the Indonesian Fashion Chamber (IFC) and other stakeholders, In2motionfest displays the creation of 163 fashion designers and accessories brands during the five-day show. The parade of 1,256 looks made of Indonesian fabrics, called wastra, is divided into 17 slots of fashion shows taking place at Assembly Hall Jakarta Convention Center, Central Jakarta on October 5—9, 2022.
The Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs Teten Masduki expressed his appreciation to Bank Indonesia and IFC for the collaboration to strengthen Indonesian brands as the world center of modest fashion at the opening ceremony (06/10).
According to the State of Global Islamic Economic Report 2020—2021, Teten conveyed that the consumption rate of the world’s Muslim community reached US$2 trillion which is absorbed in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, fashion, travel, and media or halal recreation sectors. The consumption rate is projected to increase reaching US$2.4 trillion in 2024 with an average annual growth rate of 3.1%.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s export of halal products is currently only around 3.8% of the total global market for halal products. Teten said, “To increase the contribution, we need various strategic efforts, one of which is through collaboration in organizing national and international events to encourage the promotion and publication of Indonesian Muslim products.”
Another effort initiated by the Ministry is the establishment of the Fashion Lab at Smesco Labo as a research facility for MSMEs. Teten delivered that the Fashion Lab is dedicated to MSMEs as the actors predominantly do not have a budget devoted to developing products. The Ministry also built sharing factory to facilitate local modest fashion actors.
Collaborating with the National Crafts Council (Dekranas), the Ministry links aggregators of raw materials, financing, and market access for the craft and wastra sector, one of which is through the Cerita Kriya and Cerita Wastra programs.
Teten expected that In2motionfest which involves hundreds of designers utilizing more than 14 archipelago wastra, including songket, weaving, batik, eco print, ATBM, lurik, tapis, sasirangan, indigo, border, ikat, tie-dye, and knitting can play roles as an accelerator and even an aggregator of the modest fashion sector in Indonesia.
Likewise, the Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo delivered his intention to continue presenting In2motionfest during the next ISEF. He said, “If we hold In2motionfest for three years in a row, Indonesia can become the biggest modest fashion in the world.”
Besides contributing to the national economy, Perry conveyed that In2motionfest is also a form of support for women. “Two-thirds of MSMEs are driven by women to provide a living for their families and send their children to school. Thus, promoting modest fashion means advancing our economy as well as the economy of women,” voiced Perry.
In his conclusion, Perry invited the entire audience to support women and MSMEs by purchasing modest fashion, specifically created from Indonesian wastra.
