Heaptalk, Jakarta — Anticipating a surge in traffic during Christmas and New Year 2024/2025, Telkom Group has prepared several strategies, including increasing the capacity of both fixed broadband and mobile broadband networks.

This year, fixed broadband network traffic is expected to surge by 40%, prompting Telkom to expand its capacity from 41.2 terabytes to 56.7 terabytes. This network capacity increase will occur at the gateway, CDN, and peering levels.

For the mobile broadband network, the Group has established 525 new BTS for 5G and 271 new BTS for 4G. A total of 178 BTS have had their 4G capacity upgraded. Telkom has also deployed 46 mobile combat BTS in newly crowded areas. In total, 269,000 BTS are operated, 1,400 of which are 5G.

“Preventively, we will operate under alert level 1, freezing all activities on our network to ensure all traffic remains normal. We will also conduct 24-hour patrols on all routes in Java and outside Java. Additionally, we will increase network capacity at the gateway, CDN, and peering levels, as traffic is expected to rise by around 40%. We must ensure everything is accommodated,” stated Herlan Wijanarko, Director of Network & IT Solution (NITS) of Telkom Indonesia, at a press conference in Grha Merah Putih, South Jakarta (12/16).

Focusing on services in 409 points of interest

From an infrastructure standpoint, Telkom has also prepared infrastructure across all segments, including the last mile, transport, and backbone. Two gateways in Manado are monitored 24 hours a day and supported by 14 submarine cable infrastructures connecting Sabang to Merauke.

In addition, Telkom will focus on services in 409 previously identified points of interest, including special areas, public transportation hubs, homecoming routes, residential areas, and places of worship. According to Herlan, preparations for service monitoring during Christmas and New Year 2024/2025 began in May 2024, including rehearsal tests to ensure all sky routes are active along with their backups, including power supply, backbone, and last mile.

“We have tested all backups to ensure they function well, anticipating any incidents in the network during the Christmas and New Year period. This also covers all customer backbones. We have ensured smooth video calls, seamless streaming, uninterrupted phone calls, and smooth gaming and conference calls,” Herlan concluded.
