Heaptalk, Jakarta — A joint venture of PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia (GOTO) and PT TBS Energi Utama (TOBA), Electrum, has officially inaugurated the commencement of its electric motorbike factory construction, which is marked by a groundbreaking agenda in Zone E area of Greenland International Industrial Center (GIIC), Cikarang, West Java. “The construction of the Electrum electric motor factory also supports the acceleration of public electric vehicles adoption. In addition, this step is expected to create a long-term economic impact in the renewable energy sector,” the Management of GoTo said.
The establishment of the factory is a part of GoTo’s Three Zero Intentions 2030, which stands for Zero Emission, Zero Trash, and Zero Drag. Furthermore, this invention is a strategic issue reflection that has become the primary concern of the GoTo ecosystem.
“The three zero commitments 2030 reflect important issues affecting the company and the GoTo ecosystem while guiding the company to become a world-class Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) company,” affirmed GoTo company.
Electrum targets to supply 2 million electric motorbikes for domestic needs. But for the next three years, this technology company is targeting sales of up to 500,000 electric motorbike units by 2025. Nevertheless, the company has not officially announced the amount of investment made to build an electric motor factory. However, these companies claimed to invest around US$1 billion, with each portion reaching 50% for the next four years.
The Vice Director of TOBA, Pandu Sjahrir, also stated that the company plans to allocate more than a third of its Capital Expenditure (Capex) in 2023 for the Electrum project. Although he did not reveal the detailed capex allocation for Electrum in 2023, TOBA company had revealed that the company’s total Capex reached US$60 million this year, which means that TOBA has disbursed more than US$19.9 million for the Electrum project, cited in Bisnis.
From now on, Pandu emphasized that sales of Electrum motorbikes would focus on the business-to-business (B2B) model and continue to expand to the business-to-consumer model (B2C).
In its early establishment stage, the Managing Director of Electrum, Patrick Adhiatmadja, aimed to build one assembly line with a capacity of up to 250,000 motorbikes yearly. If all of this land area is built up, Patrcik claimed this factory would be sufficient for four assembly lines that accommodate around 1 million units of electric motors.
Previously, GoTo and TOBA have worked together to establish Electrum under PT Energi Kreasi Bersama (EKB). The company was founded in December 2021, focusing on two-wheeled electric vehicle manufacturing, battery packaging technology, battery exchange infrastructure, and financing access to own electric vehicles.
