Heaptalk, Jakarta — Rantai Oxygen Indonesia (Roxi) offers blockchain technology to develop high-quality carbon projects. This technology is expected to provide transparency and secure data.
According to Gun Gun Febrianza, Chief Innovation Officer at Roxi, blockchain is claimed to store data better than centralized systems with vulnerabilities for human error and potential misuse by human antagonists. “In the centralized system, there is human error, and then there are human antagonists. They can cheat on the system, change the data, and we can’t claim high integrity or transparency if you store the data using a centralized system,” he said in a discussion with Poempida Hidayatulloh, an environmental activist, on the Forum Carbon Indonesia Youtube channel.
This transparency issue is vital as it is one of the core carbon principles issued by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). The carbon-crediting program must provide comprehensive and transparent information on all credited mitigation activities. To enable scrutiny of mitigation activities, the information shall be publicly available in electronic format and accessible to non-specialized audiences.
Recognize data manipulation
Gun Gun voiced, “If we look at the markets, there is a lot of updates right now, like the core carbon principle from the ICVCM. We need to make high-quality carbon projects. Blockchain is the fundamental system where we can claim that the system is transparent.”
Furthermore, one of the characteristics of blockchain is tamper-evidence. If someone tries to manipulate the data within the blockchain, Gungun said his party can immediately recognize and identify it. Roxi does not create a new one but leverages an appropriate blockchain protocol for carbon project development.
According to Poempida Hidayatulloh, this technology is needed in the industry as the data derived from blockchain processes will have integrity. “Blockchains will mitigate the risk of so-called super users abusing their powers. Because normally, when you have a database, the super users can always access and then change things according to their wishes,” Poempida concluded.
