Heaptalk, Jakarta — ASDP Indonesia Ferry has collected 1.9 tons of plastic waste using reverse vending machines (RVMs). This initiative is claimed to have reduced carbon emissions by up to 10.2 tons. The installation of RVMs is part of a corporate social and environmental responsibility program conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and the Ministry of Transportation.
Shelvy Arifin, Corporate Secretary of ASDP, explained that reverse vending machines are now available in several strategic locations, including the company’s Head Office, the Ministry of SOEs, and the Ministry of Transportation. The provision of these machines demonstrates a collaboration between the government and state-owned enterprises to build recycling awareness, which directly contributes to carbon emission reduction.
This program also aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13 for Climate Action and Goal 14 for Life Below Water. “Carbon emissions have become an urgent global issue. By implementing RVMs in public spaces, we aim to raise public awareness about responsible plastic waste management and contribute to marine ecosystem protection,” said Shelvy.
Promoting eco-friendly tech
Based on internal data, from 2023 to 2024, the SOE collected around 1.7 tons of plastic waste, equivalent to 92,334 plastic bottles. As a result, over 1,457 square meters of environmental space was preserved, and carbon emissions were reduced by 9.1 tons. From January to April 2025, 203 kilograms of plastic bottles (10,857 bottles) were collected, contributing to a carbon emission reduction of approximately 1 ton and conserving 171 square meters of land.
“We will continue to promote and periodically evaluate eco-friendly technologies like RVMs. We hope these machines can be installed in more public service areas and ports to maximize their environmental and societal benefits,” Shelvy added.
Heru Widodo, President Director of ASDP, emphasized the importance of the company’s active role in environmental sustainability. He stated, “ASDP is committed to playing an active role in sustainable environmental management. The implementation of RVMs is a concrete example of service transformation that prioritizes not only customers but also environmental preservation.”
According to him, the success in reducing carbon emissions by 10.2 tons proves that small, consistent steps can have a significant environmental impact. “We aim to be a pioneer in promoting sustainable lifestyles. This aligns with ASDP’s vision as an environmentally conscious integrated transportation company,” Heru concluded.
