Heaptalk, Jakarta—Minister of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi expected Starlink services in Indonesia to trigger telecommunications providers or cellular operators to innovate and provide better services.
“This is also a challenge for all cellular operators in Indonesia to innovate and provide better services for the community immediately,” he said in the Tech A Look Discussion on CNBC Indonesia TV online on Thursday (04/18).
According to Budi, technology that continues to develop constantly causes disruption. One example is Starlink, which introduces new technology in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity. He said, “The development of new technology is always disrupted, and Starlink is one of the disruptors with its LEO satellite technology.”
He emphasized the importance of satellite connectivity in Indonesia to serve areas that fiber optic cable infrastructure networks cannot reach. “With our unique geographical conditions, of course, the choice of technology cannot be equal. In cities, we might use optics, but only for rural areas or 3T, satellite technology might be economical,” Budi explained.
To create equal competition between companies providing telecommunications services, Minister Budi Arie affirmed that Starlink must follow the existing rules and regulations in Indonesia. The government will not give Starlink privileges and will treat all telecommunications companies fairly. “We do not give favoritism, but we also give fair treatment to all companies operating in the telecommunications sector,” he concluded.
