By implementing the Passkey feature, Google can synchronize users’ authentication to the entire devices through cloud technology assistance.
Heaptalk, Jakarta — A giant technology company, Google, is reportedly launching a Passkeys feature that enables users to sign in to the application and website without typing in a password. Effective on Thursday (05/04), Google’s users are accessible to shift their security scheme from the password to this Passkey feature.
According to the written statement posted on the official website, this US-based tech company voiced, “Today’s launch is a major step in a cross-industry effort we started over ten years ago. We are committed to using the passkey feature as a secure future for everyone. We expect other web and application developers to adopt this feature as a model,”
Passkey technology is the unique cryptographic key feature associated with a device. The feature can unlock the user’s account when combined with a personal identifier. With this new feature, Cloud technology can synchronize users’ authentication to the entire devices.
The company perceived this new technological scheme as more secure than the password, which possesses a high-security risk and is complex to remember. In more detail, this feature works the same way as unlocking a smartphone using a fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock PIN, which is resistant to online attacks such as phishing.
“We have performed a big move forward on our way to a passwordless future. By rolling out Passkeys across Google accounts in overall primary platforms, users can operate this feature across Google services for a password-less sign-in experience,” The company said.
However, the current implementation of passkeys seems to only work on personal accounts and has not been set up for Workspace accounts. As stated by the company, Workspace administrators can enable passkeys for their users soon.
As additional information, the implementation of Passkey was planned and announced last year. By cooperating with the FIDO Alliance, Apple, and Microsoft, Google expects to deliver security alternatives quickly and securely. Apart from using a password and two-step verification (2SV), people can utilize this feature as an additional preference to log in to their accounts.
