Google plans to demonstrate a version of Google Search AI chatbot features in 2023 and release more than 20 projects based on artificial intelligence.
Heaptalk, Jakarta — Google is shifting its focus to develop more artificial intelligence products after turning on code red for the presence of ChatGPT in late November 2022.
The conversational artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI has shaken up Google’s routine. In response to this, the CEO of Google and its parent company, Alphabet, Sundar Pichai has participated in multiple discussions on Google’s AI strategy, as reported by The Times.
Further, Sundar directed several groups in the company to refocus their efforts on dealing with the threat posed by ChatGPT to its search engine business. He also held a meeting with Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin to discuss strategies for dealing with ChatGPT.
“Being constrained in some areas allows us to bet big on others. Pivoting the company to become AI-first years ago led to groundbreaking advances across our businesses and the whole industry,” said Sundar in his email to Google employees when announcing the layoffs (01/20).
Sundar emphasized that the company, which was founded almost 25 years ago, has products that are continuously developing and has good opportunities going forward. He conveyed, “Thanks to those early investments, Google’s products are better than ever. And we are getting ready to share some entirely new experiences for users, developers, and businesses, too. We have a substantial opportunity in front of us with AI across our products and are prepared to approach it boldly and responsibly.”
Recently, Google has plans to demonstrate a version of Google Search AI chatbot features in 2023 and release more than 20 projects developed based on artificial intelligence.
Prioritizing chatbots that can obtain the facts right
In more detail, for the demo chatbot search, Google will prioritize obtaining the facts right, ensuring security, and eliminating misinformation. This is thought to be Google’s AI search power to win the competition with ChatGPT.
The chatbot created by OpenAI is reported to be unable to check what facts are conveyed and cannot distinguish between verified facts and misinformation. ChatGPT can also make up answers that AI researchers call phenomena of hallucinations.
“We continue to test our AI technology internally to make sure it is helpful and safe, and we look forward to sharing more experiences externally soon,” said a Google spokesperson Lily Lin to Insider. The company was also considering the broader societal effects of the technology.
In recent years, Google has been very careful when launching new AI products, particularly with concern for the ethics of artificial intelligence. Previously, the company has showcased chat-heavy AI products, which are similar to the system of ChatGPT, in a nonpublic demo in 2021, as mentioned by The Verge.
With the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI, Google seems to renew its strategy to focus on AI products. If previously the company avoided releasing certain AI products due to potential reputational damage, now it seems that it wants to avoid the reputation of being outdated.
