Heaptalk, Jakarta — An Education technology startup owned by the ex-app architect of Gojek, Binar Academy, has confirmed to execute the layoff towards its employee of 20%. Following the previous layoff trend around the startup landscape, the company decided to take this move as the strategic resolution to encounter the economic uncertainty in recent times.
In response to this complex consideration, the Founder and CEO of Binar Academy, Alamanda Shantika, claimed the company aims to focus on strengthening the primary business line-up, optimizing the investment activity, and shortening its business operations.
As cited by cnbcindonesia.com, Alamanda added, “The company has performed a thorough internal evaluation and determined to reduce our team reached by 20%. Despite achieving significant enhancement in the last years, we have to arrange a robust business strategy for the company to face a global economy dynamic, one of which is layoff consideration,”
Furthermore, the company is not disclosed the impacted employees amount certainly. However, as quoted by techinasia.com, based on the Binar Academy LinkedIn account data, this startup contained a minimum of 826 workforces by October 17th, 2022. If the data is calculated with this information, around 160 employees are affected by this layoff policy.
The company has ensured the impacted team will obtain a decent severance pay aligned with the applicable provision. In addition, Binar Academy startup will also provide career consultation and upskilling to facilitate the affected workforce. The startup will also perform an assistance plan dedicated to the employees discovering new job opportunities and connect them to the Binar’s partners that are still hiring new talents. Simultaneously, they would be granted a health warranty until October 30th, 2022.
The Founder of this startup explained, “The entire Head of Department, Leader Team, and Board of Directors, including me, are well prepared to bolster our impacted employees for their career consultation. During this transition process, the company will put a hard effort into easing the affected team in finding their new jobs and assisting them in growing their skills through the available courses on the platform. We will try our best to ensure proper support,”
The leader of a startup that secured Pre-Series A funding from Teja Ventures last May 2022 asserted this adjustment action would not disturb the company service offering for its clients and the business continuity. As part of the further plan, the startup would focus on serving the users through digital expertise and job placement.
As it is known, global economic uncertainty has generated this complicated layoff consideration for several startup practitioners. Binar Academy startup has followed this shocking trend around the startup ecosystem, including a Shopee layoff of 3%, or equal to 187 employees, last September this year and a Xendit layoff of 5% of the Philippines and Indonesia employees last week.
