Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, stated that all forms of cybercrime, including personal data theft, must be addressed promptly. The Tech Minister acted swiftly upon learning of a data breach at Indosat.
“We thank the Bogor City Police for successfully apprehending two IOH’s partner company employees, who were suspected of stealing and misusing citizens’ personal identity data. Even though they intended to meet SIM card sales targets, we will not tolerate this,” emphasized Budi Arie on Tuesday (09/10).
Budi Arie reminded all mobile telecommunications service providers to ensure consumer protection, maintain service quality, and comply with all applicable regulations, including the Telecommunications and Personal Data Protection Law.
Furthermore, the Tech Minister also emphasized that every telecommunications company must be responsible for the security of customer data, and there should be no compromises in this matter. Kominfo is currently working with the police to ensure that the perpetrators of this crime receive appropriate punishment. Budi Arie also stated that he had summoned Indosat for a formal explanation as part of an evaluation and to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
Meanwhile, Steve Saerang, SVP Head of Corporate Communications at Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH), clarified the case of personal data theft involving their partner. He claimed that IOH strictly prohibits misusing others’ data without consent. “We continuously strive to monitor the distribution and sale of Indosat products conducted by all our partners and require them to always comply with applicable regulations,” Steve concluded.
