Heaptalk, Jakarta — The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, has inaugurated Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) in Tangerang Regency and South Tangerang City as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
This regulation was enacted and came into effect on October 7, 2024. Jokowi stated, “The designation of this area is through Government Regulation No. 38 of 2024 concerning the Banten International Education, Technology, and Health SEZ. This SEZ was proposed by PT Surya Inter Wisesa (SIW), a subsidiary of PT Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD).”
Rizal Edwin Manansang, Secretary-General of the National SEZ Council, said that establishing this SEZ strengthens Indonesia’s position as a highly competitive country in education, health, and medical tourism. This is since the SEZ will have broad positive impacts on the economy, society, and human resource development.
“Each SEZ has a specific development focus and is expected to have a significant impact on the economy, create jobs, and attract investment,” Edwin said on Wednesday (10/09). The area, spanning 59.68 hectares, targets an investment realization of IDR 18.8 trillion. Once fully operational, the SEZ is expected to provide jobs for up to 13,446 people.
In addition, this SEZ will become an international education center, with Monash University operating, which is ranked 37th in the world. The center will focus on research, digital economy, and technology development, with a target of 100 startups, integrated healthcare services, and creative industries.
The establishment of the Banten International Education, Technology, and Health SEZ aims to accelerate job creation and boost economic growth in Tangerang Regency, Banten Province. In addition to contributing to local economic development, this SEZ is also designed to support the acceleration and expansion of national economic development.
PT Surya Inter Wisesa, as the proposer, is bringing in a network of international healthcare practitioners focusing on medical aesthetics. In the technology sector, the area will serve as a digital hub and incubator for startups. Global universities in the region are expected to enrich the education ecosystem, making this SEZ a center for innovation, technology, and international-standard education.
