Heaptalk, Jakarta — Microsoft announced that Skype ceased its messaging and calling platform on Monday, May 5, 2025, after 22 years of operation and transitioned all its services to Teams for free.

Using their credentials, Skype users can sign in to Teams on any supported device. By logging in to Teams with a Skype account, chats and contacts will automatically appear in the app, allowing users to pick up where they left off quickly. During the transition period, Teams users can call and chat with Skype users, and Skype users can do the same with Teams users.

With Teams, users can access many of the same core features they use in Skype, such as one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Teams offers enhanced features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and building and joining communities for free.

Adapting to customer needs

Jeff Teper, President of Microsoft’s collaborative apps and platforms, admitted that how people communicate has evolved significantly. Technology has continuously transformed how they connect, from instant messaging to video calls. “In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub,” Teper stated.

However, if users do not prefer to migrate to Teams, they can instead export their data, including chats, contacts, and call history. Established in 2003, the platform remained available until May 5, 2025, allowing users to explore Teams and decide on the best option. Teper added, “Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications and supporting countless meaningful moments, and we are honored to have been part of the journey.”

Moving forward, paid features, including credit and subscriptions, will no longer be offered to new customers. Current subscription users can continue to use their credits and subscriptions until the end of their next renewal period. Credit users can also continue to use their remaining sredit. After May 5, 2025, the dial pad will be available to remaining paid users from the Skype web portal and within Teams.
