Heaptalk, Jakarta — To meet Indonesia’s need for affordable internet, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has prepared a 100 Mbps internet plan priced at Rp100,000.
“Yes, since this is a technology access that, according to the ITU, can provide affordable aspects for the community. That is based on our study,” said Wayan Toni, Director General of Digital Infrastructure at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.
The government will encourage using the 1.4 GHz frequency spectrum with an 80 MHz bandwidth for cheap and fast internet access. The target internet speed for BWA service providers is 100 Mbps, priced at Rp100,000 to Rp150,000.
Wayan said, “We hope the rate will be around Rp100,000 to Rp150,000. Remember, this is not for cellular. So, if they are going to build here, they have to bring fiber optic first, then beam it to homes through internet access.”
He further explained that the affordable internet tariff can be provided by auctioning the 1.4 GHz frequency. Hence, the auction of the 1.4 GHz frequency is prioritized. The auction target will likely be held in the third week of February 2025. He added, “If the ministerial regulations align with the schedule, it’s likely the third week of February.”
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs will invite all companies with fixed packet-switched network licenses. “Later, we will invite operators with such licenses,” he explained. This is specifically for fixed network block packet switches. Not for cellular; cellular will be given later,” Wayan concluded.
