Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) is currently conducting an evaluation and audit of its system and governance for controlling negative content. Nezar Patria, the Deputy Minister of Komdigi, stated that this step was taken to prevent cases of abuse of authority in handling online gambling websites from recurring.

“We are taking internal measures after the incident that occurred yesterday. We are immediately conducting an audit of the technology systems we have and the governance in managing negative content,” Nezar said after the launch of the 2024 Press Freedom Index Survey Results at the Gran Melia Hotel in Setiabudi, South Jakarta.

According to Nezar, the audit aims to ensure that access and handling of online gambling sites are more reliable and trustworthy, including preventing the misuse of access rights or failure to follow proper protocols. He explained, “Some individuals or certain parties may use the access entrusted to them inappropriately, which should be managed properly, but instead, it’s used to allow online gambling to continue operating.”

Nezar acknowledged that the significant financial incentives offered by online gambling operators could tempt employees to engage in illegal activities. “Anyone could be dragged into this enticing online gambling business,” he added.

For this reason, Komdigi is also working closely with the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to combat online gambling. This includes monitoring suspicious transactions involving Komdigi employees.

Furthermore, Nezar hopes that the case of online gambling involving Komdigi employees will lead to uncovering larger players in the online gambling network in Indonesia. “We hope this step will be followed by uncovering bigger players in the online gambling industry,” he concluded.
