Heaptalk, Jakarta – Since it was officially announced of the National Press Day 2024, concerns have arisen that the Presidential Regulation Number 32 of 2024 concerning the Responsibility of Digital Platform Companies to Support Quality Journalism or the Publisher Rights will only benefit certain individuals.

Chairman of the Press Council Complaints and Ethics Enforcement Commission, Yadi Hendriana, dismissed the speculation. He believed that the “Publisher Rights” will give benefits for all parties, both established medias and independent medias.

In the Merdeka Barat Forum Dialogue 9 (FMB9) with the theme “Perpres Publisher Right, Untuk Siapa?” at the Communication and Information Ministry Media Center, Central Jakarta some time ago, Yadi stated, “With this presidential regulation, in groups or individuals, independent medias will have an equal bargaining content with major national media. Their content have a chance to be used in platforms such as Google, Meta, and much more.”

Yadi Hendriana corrected the misdirect assumption regarding the Publisher Right regulation that considered will limit journalists space. He believed this presidential regulation focuses on platform responsibilities rather than regulating journalism products.

“There are three journalism processes, namely reporting, editing, and publishing. Those steps have been regulated by Press Council in the code of ethics. There is one process that is not related to the ethic codes, such as content distribution. With the absence of ethical standard for this process, the presidential regulation will handle that,” he explained.

Yadi Hendrina declared that Press Council will ensure the Publisher Rights regulations will benefit lots of individuals, along with establishing a high quality and dignified journalism in the future. Furthermore, the chairman added, after two days being published by President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo, the Press Council promptly forms a task force to supervise the implementation of the Presidential Decree on Publisher Rights.

“The task force consists of many groups, not only just the government and Press Council, but also involve related experts,” he affirmed.

Not only that, Press Council will also form selection committee to filter committee members. Later on, this committee will select prospective committee members coming from different backgrounds, notably journalists, law experts, to academics.

“There will be Press Council and senior journalists. Hopefully, it will also involve related experts, such as IT, law, and business experts,” explained the Press Council Complaints and Ethics Enforcement Commission Chairman.

Yadi Hendriana ensured there will be no interference from the government in forming this committee. According to him, this committee will purely involve professional and competent people regarding journalism and media.

“The underline of this matter is there will be no government interference. This committee will just involve people who understand journalism, adjudication, mediation, and negotiation. People that are professional and credible on their field,” he concluded.
