Bing and Edge are embedded with next-generation OpenAI large language model delivering new experiences spanning better searches, more complete answers, and new chat experience.

Heaptalk, Jakarta — Microsoft has transformed its Bing search engine and Edge web browser to be powered with artificial intelligence, a collaboration with ChatGPT maker, OpenAI, according to an official announcement on Microsoft’s blog (02/07).

The integration of AI into Bing and Edge delivers new experiences, spanning better searches, more complete answers, a new chat experience, and the ability to generate content. Microsoft claimed that the tools can play the role of an AI copilot for the web.

Currently, the all-new AI-powered Bing can be accessed for a preview through the desktop version of the website. In the coming weeks, Microsoft will scale the preview to millions with a mobile version preview will be released soon.

“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all–search. Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web,” said CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella on the launch of the new Bing and Edge (02/07).

According to Corporate Vice President & Consumer Chief Marketing Officer of Microsoft Yusuf Mehdi, out of 10 billion search queries a day, half of them were estimated to be unanswered.

“In fact, 40% of the time, people click on search links, they click back immediately. That is a sign they’re not finding what they want. And most notably, we have to adapt to search versus the other way around. Turns out search looks better if you give it fewer keywords. You might be surprised to know that 75% of all searches are three keywords or less,” said Yusuf at the launch event (02/07).

Next-gen OpenAI model is claimed stronger than ChatGPT

Further, Yusuf explained that Microsoft carried out several technical breakthroughs to reinvent the new search engine, including the incorporation of the next-generation OpenAI model. The new Bing is running on a next-generation OpenAI large language model that is claimed more powerful than ChatGPT and customized specifically for search. The latest language model takes key learnings and advancements from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5.

The latest version of Bing is equipped with the Microsoft Prometheus model. Yusuf said, “We have developed a proprietary way of working with the OpenAI model that allows us to best leverage its power. We call this collection of capabilities and techniques the Prometheus model.” Yusuf conveyed that this combination will give users more relevant, timely, and targeted results, with improved safety.

In addition, Bing is also applying AI to its core search algorithm which led to the largest jump in relevance in two decades. With this AI model, even basic search queries can become more accurate and more relevant. Yusuf emphasized that the new Bing will bring a new user experience.

“We are reimagining how you interact with search, browser, and chat by pulling them into a unified experience. This will unlock a completely new way to interact with the web,” said Yusuf.

Microsoft is still working with OpenAI to deal with several issues that appeared in the previous version of the AI model, particularly misinformation and disinformation. “Together with OpenAI, we’ve also been intentional in implementing safeguards to defend against harmful content. Our teams are working to address issues such as misinformation and disinformation, content blocking, data safety, and preventing the promotion of harmful or discriminatory content in line with our AI principles,” concluded Yusuf.
