Heaptalk, Jakarta — Grammarly, an AI communication assistant, announced it has acquired a productivity startup, Coda, for an undisclosed value (12/17). This acquisition will bring Coda’s intelligence and flexibility into the Grammarly experience to supercharge user productivity.

In this merger, the Grammarly AI Assistant will be enriched by the context of Coda Brain to become more intelligent and helpful. The assistant will be able to give suggestions and refinements based on the writing and have permission-aware connections to all of the user’s other systems, including email, docs, CRM, and project trackers.

Coda Docs and Grammarly AI Assistant will be unified to provide users with a flexible home for work. The Coda Docs will continue to work as they do now but will get supercharged with the Grammarly Assistant. The Assistant will continue to provide suggestions and refinements, but now, users’ work will also have a natural AI-native home.

Combining users’ knowledge and gen AI chat

In the longer term, this acquisition plan will incorporate the two entities that aim to redefine productivity for the AI era. It will combine users’ company knowledge, generative AI chat features, a complete productivity suite, and hundreds of agents to help them work smarter. Along with the merger, Grammarly appointed Shishir Mehrotra, co-founder and Coda CEO, to replace Rahul Roy-Chowdhury as CEO.

According to Roy-Chowdhury, as AI permeates every facet of the modern workplace, people are experiencing one of the most significant technology shifts—one that redefines how they collaborate and get work done. As the business has grown to 40 million daily active users, Grammarly has deployed AI at a scale few others can match.

“As we got to know the Coda team better, it was clear they share our vision and bring tremendous technology with their flexible productivity suite. It’s time to build the future together. In this next chapter, you’ll still be able to use the Grammarly you know and love—and you’ll also have new tools to help you work faster and smarter in lots of new ways,” Rahul stated.

Shishir Mehrotra admitted that this merger represents an opportunity to accelerate the Coda product and its mission. “Together, we will build the AI-native suite of the future. And I’m honored to lead the combined companies as CEO. In the longer term, we plan to weave the best of Coda and Grammarly together. We aim to redefine productivity for the AI era,” he concluded.
