Heaptalk, Jakarta — Tokopedia confirmed to trim an undisclosed number of employees following ByteDance’s layoff which will begin June 2024.
According to Nuraini Razak, the Director of Corporate Affairs of Tokopedia and ShopTokopedia, the company has identified several areas for strengthening within the organization and adjusted its teams to align with its goals.
“As a result, we had to make necessary adjustments to the organizational structure as part of the company’s growth strategy. This statement clarifies the recent news related to ByteDance’s plan to cut employees in its e-commerce business unit in Indonesia, Tokopedia. The plan is claimed to affect about 450 workforces, accounting for about 9% of the total number in its department.
Besides maintaining cost efficiency, this job termination is part of TikTok’s parent company’s extensive business reformation to the overall e-commerce unit, which expects to slash job redundancy. The employees’ job cuts will begin as quickly as possible, starting this month. Nonetheless, the number of employees affected is still finalized and may fluctuate with the company’s current conditions.
GoTo responds to the Tokopedia’s layoff
Previously, PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia revealed that any discussion taken by Tokopedia’s management should be determined by them.
Moreover, noting that GoTo is a non-controlling minority shareholder, the Group believed that PT Tokopedia continued to review the effectiveness of its organization, similar to other companies. As is known, ByteDance is currently the majority shareholder of Tokopedia after six months of completing the merger between Tokopedia and TikTok. Meanwhile, GoTo only holds around 25% of the remaining shares of this e-commerce company.
“GoTo believes that this e-commerce management will make prudent decisions as to the management of its business, taking into account various considerations to ensure the best possible outcome for Tokopedia and all of its stakeholders,” GoTo’s Corporate Secretary, R.A Koesoemohadiani, confirmed in the official statement.
Nevertheless, to the best of the company’s knowledge in its capacity, the Group also denied a plan to discontinue almost 80% of Tokopedia’s services, which impacted operating activities, financial conditions, and other ongoing concerns.
