Heaptalk, Jakarta — E-commerce company Shopee is reportedly bidding to relocate employees from one of its divisions to Solo and Yogyakarta. In this measure, the company will move the center of its activities from its department to this area, which is expected to boost the local digital talent in Indonesia’s regions.
“We have offered relocation options to team members who meet the applicable relocation requirements and conditions. Some team members have also accepted the relocation. We have been preparing the operation for the last year,” said the Head of Public Affairs of Shopee Indonesia, Radynal Nataprawira, as Bisnis reported.
Denying the mass layoff rumors, this online marketplace company will transfer employees for customer service positions to these two Indonesian cities. Instead of revealing the number of the relocated members in detail, Radyal admitted that the employees who refused to move were not fired but chose to resign.
For other team members who will discontinue this relocation plan, Shopee will ensure they obtain support following their rights and applicable government policies. They will also receive other supporting facilities, including health insurance, for three months ahead. Shopee’s employee relocation effort is claimed to be an efficiency measure to minimize the operations expenses on the workforce’s salary.
Shopee has expanded its offices branch in Surakarta and Yogyakarta, employing thousands of local workers. The company officially opened an office in Solo Paragon Mall in October 2021 and a branch in Solo Technopark in February 2024. Meanwhile, in Yogyakarta, this Lazada and Tokopedia competitor opened a branch in Sahid J-Walk, Sleman.
“Shopee continues to develop digital talent in several regions in Indonesia, which is expected to contribute to creating a local digital talent development ecosystem and providing job opportunities in the region,” Radynal concluded.
