Heaptalk, Jakarta – Dr. Martens announced its collaboration with Nine Inch Nails by launching iconic collection inspired by one of the band’s legendary album, The Downward Spiral.
The album that was released 30 years ago delivers confrontative lyrics which depicts a destructionnof a belief, ideas, and ego of the main character, making this album to be more intense and touch the heart of million people. The album extend the exploration about emptiness which appear from self- destructive.
Dr. Marten launch a collection which is specifically designed to celebrate this album by combining iconic design with industrial touch. Several iconic silluette are presented as the appreciation for the strength and power of the music.
“This collaboration makes sense. It is not only because a lot of NIN’s fan who wear Dr. Martens in its concert for years, like what I did, but because NIN and Dr. Martens are known for their action to reject convention and expectation to achieve innovation. From the very beginning, our goal was to create a collection that was as authentic as possible to the essence of Nine Inch Nails, and through close collaboration with the Dr. Martens, I believe we have succeeded in making it happen,” said John Crawford, Creative Director of Nine Inch Nails.
The 1460 boot has been redesigned with a touch of Russell Mills’ Wound album artwork, presented in a bold black and white combination. Each 8-eye comes with a variety of fastening options, including a logo ankle zipper that can also be removed. The boot also features a textured rubber trim and toe cap that give it an industrial aesthetic, creating a unique contrasting silhouette with the backhand and smooth leather upper. Each model has a unique sole: commando tread, BEN outsole and commando ice outsole. It features the iconic AirWair heel loop, as well as various design elements that reference Nine Inch Nails and The Downward Spiral album throughout the design.
Apart from that, there is also the 1461 3-eye Shoe collection, which also presents a new interpretation with a textured rubber toe cap embossed with the NIN logo, combined with smooth leather and the classic Dr. Black backhand. Martens at the top. The shoe features iconic visual elements, such as the ‘Crystal Teeth’ image from The Downward Spiral album art, as well as subtle “the downward spiral” print. A black BEN sole and Doc’s traditional yellow welt stitching also further emphasize the design.
Lastly, there are the iconic 10-eye shoes from Dr. Martens, the 1490 Boot, is inspired by NIN’s pre-concert ritual, where they smear their bodies with cornstarch to create a post-apocalyptic aesthetic of decomposition, the boot is made from textured black and white backhand leather. The shoe features a transverse ankle zipper and logo hardware, and sits on an ice commando sole with double black-and-white welt stitching. It features a monochrome heel loop and two pairs of twine straps for a more dynamic look.
For information, the 1490 Boot collection is made in an exclusive edition and designed with leather embossed with The Downward Spiral album art in solid black. This limited edition is not sold to the general public, but was specifically given to several loyal NIN fans as a form of appreciation for their support so far.
