Heaptalk, Jakarta — Thamrin Nine and MRT Jakarta will be connected via an underground tunnel by 2026. “There will be a connection in mid-2026, and that will be the first to connect with MRT Jakarta (through the underground),” said Angga Satria Perdana, Head of Corporate Communication & Branding Department at MRT Jakarta, on Wednesday (09/25).

The former Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, initiated the underground tunnel. Anies mentioned that this underground pedestrian walkway will be the first to be built in Jakarta and Indonesia. MRT passengers will eventually be able to use the tunnel to access buildings around the station. “MRT passengers will pass through the tunnel that directly reaches the buildings around the station,” Anies said.

Anies also claimed that the construction of this pedestrian tunnel represents a vision for the future, particularly in improving public transportation integration. Moreover, Jakarta has already made strides in intermodal integration. For example, at level 1, integration connects different modes of transport, such as linking MRT stations with TransJakarta bus stops, KRL Commuter Line stations, and other public transportation. At level 2, the integration connects stations with workplaces.

Angga also stated that, in August 2024, MRT Jakarta carried 3,739,006 passengers. “The daily ridership in August exceeded the target set by MRT Jakarta, 102,000 passengers per day. The highest recorded number was on Friday (08/02), reaching 141,069 passengers,” said Angga.

Thus far, the ridership increase trend is evident at five stations: Dukuh Atas BNI, Bundaran HI, Lebak Bulus Grab, Blok M BCA, Senayan Mastercard, and Istora Mandiri. Factors such as intermodal integration, nearby buildings, feeder transit partners, and lifestyle programs and events have driven this growth.
