Heaptalk, Jakarta — President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has signed the Law on the Special Region of Jakarta (Daerah Khusus Jakarta, DKJ). The law states that Jakarta will remain the capital of the Republic of Indonesia until its official relocation to the new capital city, Nusantara Capital (IKN). The DKJ Law specifies that the capital’s relocation to IKN will occur once Jokowi signs a Presidential Decree.
“At the time this law is enacted, the Special Capital Region of Jakarta will remain the capital of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia until the Presidential Decree is issued regarding the relocation of the capital from the Special Capital Region of Jakarta to the new capital city, Nusantara, under legal provisions,” reads Article 63 of the DKJ Law.
However, President Jokowi has not yet disclosed a specific date for issuing the Presidential Decree on the capital’s relocation from Jakarta to IKN after the DKJ Law takes effect. What is certain is that Nusantara will become the new capital, replacing Jakarta, especially as construction in IKN continues while awaiting Jokowi’s decree regarding the change in Jakarta’s capital status.
Furthermore, Article 64 of the DKJ Law states that Jakarta will change its status to an autonomous region equivalent to a province once IKN officially becomes the capital. Jakarta will then be developed into a national economic hub and global city, serving as a center for trade, service industries, financial services, and business activities on national, regional, and international levels.
In addition, under the DKJ Law, Jakarta will have an agglomeration area led by an Agglomeration Council headed by the elected vice president. Article 64 also mentions that the capital’s relocation from Jakarta to Nusantara Capital will occur in stages.
