Heaptalk, Malaysia – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto made a significant state visit to Putrajaya, Malaysia, during the festive Eid al-Fitr celebrations, focusing on critical discussions surrounding U.S. import tariffs that impact ASEAN countries.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed President Prabowo’s visit, highlighting the longstanding friendship between the two nations. “In the blessed atmosphere of Eid, I have received a visit from my old friend, President Prabowo Subianto, yesterday evening,” he said in a statement on his official social media from Jakarta on Sunday.

The discussions primarily focused on the repercussions of the recent U.S. import tariff policy, implemented under the Trump administration, which has affected several ASEAN nations, including Indonesia. The meeting also addressed humanitarian assistance for the people of Myanmar in light of recent earthquakes.

While neither Indonesia nor Malaysia has disclosed the specific outcomes of their meeting, the dialogue is viewed as a pivotal step in strengthening bilateral relations. “May the spirit of Eid al-Fitr continue to foster brotherhood and cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia for regional security and welfare,” stated PM Anwar following their talks.

Indonesia faces significant challenges due to the U.S. tariff policies, with a reciprocal tariff rate of 32%. This number surpasses those of other ASEAN countries, such as Singapore at 10%, the Philippines at 17%, and Malaysia at 24%. The implementation of these tariffs is set to occur in phases, beginning with a general tariff of 10% for all countries starting April 5, 2025. Specific tariffs, including those for Indonesia, will take effect on April 9, 2025.

As the countries navigate these challenges, their cooperative efforts during this festive period reflect a commitment to shared interests and regional stability.
