Heaptalk, Jakarta — To evaluate import regulations, Trade Minister Budi Santoso said the government plans to form a deregulation task force in Jakarta on Monday (04/14). “Once the task force is formed, we will meet to discuss what actions need to be taken and how the evaluation will proceed—so we’ll wait for that,” said Budi.
According to Budi, one of the key regulations under review is Minister of Trade Regulation No. 36 of 2023 on Import Policies and Regulations. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto previously announced the formation of the task force, saying the government is preparing two new task forces: one focused on layoffs and employment and another on deregulation.
“These task forces, particularly the ones related to layoffs and employment opportunities, are currently being finalized. The second one is the deregulation task force,” said Airlangga during a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs office in Jakarta on Monday (04/14).
The deregulation task force is being formed to follow up on directives from President Prabowo Subianto. During a recent Economic Forum at Menara Mandiri, Prabowo urged the revocation of Minister of Trade Regulation No. 8 on Import Policies and Regulations if it does not benefit Indonesia.
Furthermore, Minister of Trade Regulation No. 8 of 2024 and related policies involving other ministries and institutions will be reviewed. This directly responds to President Prabowo’s instruction to revoke regulations not in Indonesia’s best interest.
Isy Karim, Acting Director General of Domestic Trade at the Ministry of Trade, said a meeting is necessary to discuss how the regulation will be implemented and its future. Before reporting to President Prabowo, Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto will first address the matter. “Before reporting to the President, of course there will be discussions between ministries first under the Coordinating Minister, to determine the direction forward before it’s brought to the President,” concluded Isy Karim.
