Heaptalk, Jakarta — The plan to extend the mass rapid transit (MRT) system to Tangerang Selatan, a project that promises improved transportation and enhanced connectivity, continues to be discussed. The central government has expressed its support for assisting with this project as long as the local government is committed to providing funding.
Responding to this news, the Secretary of South Tangerang City, Bambang Noertjahjo, told the media, “At the moment, I have not received any definite plans, meaning we are still at the technical concept stage and have not yet progressed to policy development.”
The regional government’s role in securing funds for this project is pivotal. The Secretary of Tangerang Selatan City, Bambang Noertjahjo, underscored this, stating, “The funding is not small. Hence, there must be a commitment from the regional government to also seek funds. It is not feasible for the central government to fund everything.”
Meanwhile, the Mayor of South Tangerang, Benyamin Davnie, emphasized that the MRT in South Tangerang still seems challenging to materialize, considering that the project, which will require a substantial budget, does not yet have a clear funding source.
Benyamin emphasized that extending the MRT to South Tangerang can only proceed with private sector involvement. Given that South Tangerang’s regional budget is only Rp4.5 trillion, it would not be able to finance the project. “The support capacity of the APBD is insufficient. Therefore, private sector involvement is essential as the investment value is significant,” concluded Benyamin.
