Heaptalk, Jakarta — Indonesia’s aquatech startup focusing on the shrimp industry, JALA, has completed a new investment in a Series A round worth US$13.1 million (around Rp202 billion) led by Intudo Ventures.

Sinar Mas Digital Ventures (SMDV) is also involved in this strategic investment. JALA also bagged other supports from its existing investors, including Mirova, an investment manager focusing on sustainable investment, and Meloy Fund, an investment fund focusing on the fisheries and seafood sector.

The startup will allocate its fresh capital to strengthen shrimp cultivation in the archipelago while also broadening its business reach in multiple Indonesia regions, spanning Sumatera, Sulawesi, and Nusa Tenggara, as this aquatech startup recognized substantial potential for the shrimp farming industry.

JALA’s Co-Founder and CEO, Liris Maduningtyas, conveyed, “The heart of JALA’s mission is paving the way to a sustainable future for Indonesia’s shrimp industry. With the backing of Intudo Ventures and SMDV, we are more thrilled than ever to amplify our efforts. This funding will enable us to bring our end-to-end shrimp farming solution to remote areas in Indonesia and equip local farmers with the technological and financial support they need to advance the country’s shrimp production.”

Founded in 2017, JALA is a digital ecosystem enabler for the shrimp industry value chain, providing comprehensive end-to-end solutions to streamline the shrimp farming process and improve productivity, efficiency, and sustainability.

JALA provides farmers with a suite of advanced technology services, including data-driven aquaculture analysis and integrated multiparameter water quality monitoring device, as well as access to farm assistance, farm financing, high-quality supplies and inputs, and marketplace services to bring harvests to market.

As the world’s fourth-largest shrimp producer, the Founding Partner of Intudo Ventures, Patrick Yip, realized that the archipelago plays a crucial role in the global seafood supply chain. With the continued evolution of the country’s shrimp industry, Patrick claimed that the demand for modern cultivation has risen in tandem.

“JALA’s suite of digital solutions backs farmers to create tangible economic value, increasing farming yields, leading to more sustainable cultivation practices, and bringing Indonesian shrimp to global markets. We’re excited to support JALA’s mission to digitize and strengthen shrimp farming in Indonesia.” Patrick added.

JALA has significantly impacted the shrimp industry, gaining the trust of over 20,000 users. This startup has monitored shrimp in more than 35,300 ponds through the JALA App. This Indonesia’s aquatech company has also collaborated with Conservation International in building the first Climate Smart Shrimp, a combined intensification effort with mangrove restoration for traditional shrimp farms.
