Heaptalk, Jakarta — West Kutai Regency Government through the Tourism Department presented a traditional dance competition by students on October 28-29, 2023 at Sendawar Cultural Park, Barong Tongkok District in celebration of the regency’s 24th anniversary.
This activity aims to instill regional cultural values in both West Kutai and East Kalimantan. The competition, which was held for two days, was participated by students from dance studios and schools throughout the regency. They performed traditional dances typical of East Kalimantan, West Kutai, and the Dayak tribe. Apart from the choreography, they also prepared costumes that matched the title of the dance.
After going through the assessment process, the judges announced three winners of the traditional dance competition by students in West Kutai, namely 1st place Seroyoq B Perkasa with a total score of 1,278; 2nd place Seroyoq A Karangsangan with a total score of 1,275; and 3rd place at SMKN 1 Sendawar with a total score of 1,220.

According to the judges, there were still several dancers who could not adapt to the movements and music. The judges suggested that participants use music with a unique intro that matches the title to attract the audience. Additionally, the judges also asked participants to prepare themselves as early as possible, from dance to costumes, to be able to give their best performance.
Apart from that, the judges appreciated the students who were willing to take part in this traditional dance competition. The enthusiasm of the participants demonstrated that there are still many young people who love the arts and culture of their respective regions.
“Congratulations to them, they are willing and not ashamed to appear on stage to perform traditional dances. However, we have to choose the three best from all the participants,” concluded one of the judges (10/29). (Translated by Sinta)
