“Communication and Information Ministry strives to make this frequency can be auctioned or be allocated to the cellular operators shortly by taking into account business feasibility,” added Budi.

Heaptalk, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) announced has completed Analog Switch Off (SO) program to drive the acceleration of 5G adoption in Indonesia.

“Today, we have completed Analog Switch Off (ASO) program, thus the low band frequency, namely 700Mhz, is clean and can be auctioned. The 26GHz (mid-band) millimeter wave spectrum also is auctioned,” stated The Communication and Information Minister Budie Arie Setiadi during the opening of The 2ND MASTEL’s 5G Summit in Jakarta (09/21).

Budi also added that the government will accelerate 5G adoption through the provision and distribution of digital infrastructure from upstream to downstream.

“Communication and Information Ministry strives to make this frequency can be auctioned or be allocated to the cellular operators shortly by taking into account business feasibility,” added Budi.

To date, the government recorded 5G services for commercial use have reached 49 cities across Indonesia. The 5G infrastructure also continues to be developed, particularly in 5 super priority tourist destinations and in several venues for the 43rd ASEAN Summit.

Budi affirmed that these measures aim to provide faster and better internet access to society. He delivered, “OpenSignal data in 2023 demonstrated the average download speed, which only attains 15 to 22 Mbps. With the presence of 5G, people can experience the speed escalation of 3x to 4x with low latency compared to 4G network.”

Budi also explained that 5G can be utilized for mobile broadband, Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency, and Massive Machine-Type Communication. As cited from research conducted by ITB, XL, and Qualcomm in 2020, this technology is projected to contribute to Indonesia’s GDP by Rp 2,802 trillion or USD 182 billion.

However, Minister Budi conveyed that the government faced several challenges, including preparing the regulation and permission for the spectrum, cost, and technical standard to support 5G network in Indonesia.

“Regarding 5G spectrum assignment, I realized that building 5G network requires tremendous investment value, therefore we are open to any suggestion regarding the incentive to the telecommunication provider to support a sustainable business model,” voiced Budi.
