Heaptalk, Jakarta — Telkom Indonesia’s subsidiary, Telin, established a partnership with BW Digital to expand connectivity in Indonesia and Australia. Representatives of both parties signed an MoU to jointly develop the Hawaiki Nui 1 submarine cable communications system at International Telecoms Week 2024 in Washington DC.

Hawaiki Nui 1 is the first phase of BW Digital’s submarine cable communications system development program. This cable will link Australia, Indonesia, and Singapore, including optional branches to the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and Timor Leste. The company designed this 10,000 km long cable to accommodate a capacity of more than 140 Tbps.

Furthermore, this submarine cable will be a new, more efficient route via the Torres Strait in northeastern Australia. BW Digital claimed that Hawaiki Nui 1 will provide more reliable connectivity, diversity, and security between Australia, Asia, and Southeast Asia. The system will also provide the first direct cable link between Sydney and Darwin and from Darwin to Singapore, with branches to Jakarta and Batam.

Telin and BW Digital will collaborate to develop, procure, and build Hawaiki Nui 1. The submarine cable communication system is expected to be operational (ready for service) in 2027. Telin will act as the Indonesian cable landing party.

Supporting the digital ecosystem at Nongsa Digital Park, Batam

Telin CEO Budi Satria Dharma Purba stated that the Asia Pacific region is emerging as a center for data center telecommunications traffic growth in the current digital landscape. Data center capacity in Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, and Indonesia will thrive in the next five years. “Through our partnership with BW Digital and as part of our 7 ICE undersea cable system, we aim to bridge the connectivity gap between data centers in these countries and shape the future of the Asia Pacific Undersea Landscape,” Budi said in a written statement.

Meanwhile, BW Digital CEO Ludovic Hutier stated, “BW Digital welcomes forming a strategic alliance with Telin to build the Hawaiki Nui 1 submarine cable and serve the increasing capacity needs between Australia, Indonesia, and Singapore.”

This collaboration follows BW Digital and Citramas Group’s partnership in early March 2024. This partnership aims to build a world-class digital ecosystem at Nongsa Digital Park in Batam, Indonesia, centered on an 80 MW data center serving businesses, governments, and communities nationwide.

Hawaiki Nui 1 is expected to support the development of the digital ecosystem at Nongsa Digital Park, located in Batam, Indonesia. Together with the existing Hawaiki cable, which has been connecting Sydney, Auckland, and the US West Coast since 2018, Hawaiki Nui 1 offers the best connectivity to customers operating in the Asia-Pacific region.
