Heaptalk, Jakarta — GE Vernova Inc. (GEV) has announced the commencement of commercial operations at the 780-megawatt (MW) Tambak Lorok Block 3 Gas Steam Power Plant, owned by PLN Indonesia Power (PLNIP) located in Tanjung Mas, Central Java.

Powered by GE Vernova’s HA combined-cycle equipment, this power plant can generate electricity sufficient to power approximately 5 million homes in Indonesia. “With the highest energy consumption among Southeast Asian countries, Indonesia’s energy usage will significantly increase as the economy and population grow,” GE Vernova stated.

To support Indonesia’s climate and energy transition agenda, the Indonesian government has pledged to stop building new coal-fired power plants and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 or earlier. Indonesia aims to phase out its entire fleet of coal-fired power plants by 2040.

“The Tambak Lorok project is a milestone for Indonesia, adding a large-capacity plant to the system that brings stability to the nation’s power grid,” said Edwin Nugraha Putra, CEO of PLN Indonesia Power.

According to him, Tambak Lorok aligns with the national energy policy to reduce emissions in the power sector. As more coal-fired power plants are decommissioned, adding reliable and flexible power that stabilizes the grid becomes essential.

Edwin added, “We believe GE Vernova, Marubeni Corporation, and Hutama Karya, as the EPC, have delivered the highest quality and safety standards in building this power plant, which will provide reliable and more sustainable electricity to the Java power grid.”

Tambak Lorok is supported by GE Vernova’s advanced equipment, including the 9HA.02 gas turbine, STF-D650 steam turbine, GE Vernova’s Once Through (OT) HRSG, and other supporting equipment. In addition to delivering and installing the core power generation equipment in a combined-cycle configuration, GE Vernova also provides holistic solutions, including a 15-year service agreement for machine maintenance, training, and maintenance management to enhance the operational performance and reliability of the Tambak Lorok plant. The training will support skill development and knowledge transfer to improve the capabilities of PLN IP’s operational team.

“Our HA technology has been selected to increase power generation capacity in Indonesia and support the decarbonization process,” said Ramesh Singaram, President and CEO of Asia, GE Vernova Gas Power.

Ramesh added, “In our commitment to support Indonesia’s power development and economic growth, our HA technology offers the industry’s lowest emissions, giving customers like PLN Indonesia Power the ability to reduce fuel consumption while lowering carbon emissions. Going forward, this technology will help transition towards net-zero carbon emissions.”

The plant is claimed to have a lower emissions impact, with up to 60% fewer emissions than other plants of the same size using diesel, coal, and other fossil fuels. Additionally, to further advance decarbonization by utilizing gas power, the H-Class gas turbine portfolio currently can burn up to 50% hydrogen by volume when mixed with natural gas, with plans to reach 100%.
