Heaptalk, Jakarta — Directorate General of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia, has received 4 applications for trademark registration associated with Citayam Fashion Week (CFW), filed between 20-25 July 2022. Initiated by a group of creative young people from the suburbs of Jakarta, Citayam Fashion Week has been the talk of the country for past few weeks.

Originally the young people come from Jakarta buffer areas e.g. Citayam, Bojonggede, and Depok City to Dukuh Atas MRT Station in South Jakarta to walk across the street acting like professional models in a runaway. Several content creators collaborate with them to produce entertaining posts through social media.

This phenomenon drew the attention of various parties, one of which is public figures Baim Wong and her wife, Paula Verhoeven, who works as a model. This married-couple took the initiative to apply for trademark registration for Citayam Fashion Week under their company, PT Tiger Wong Entertainment, on 20 July 2022.

A day later, a content creator who works at Kutipan X Media Network, Indigo Aditya Nugroho, also applied for trademark registration for Citayam Fashion Week. Kutipan X has a TikTok account known as the first party to spread the existence of these young people on the street nearby Dukuh Atas MRT Station this past year.

Apart from the 2 applications for the service category in class 41, there are also 2 other submissions made for the goods category under the name of Daniel Handoko Santoso and PT Tekstil Industri Palekat. As explained by the executive officer of the Director General of Intellectual Property, Ir. Razilu, M.Si., CGCAE., during the press conference on 26 July 2022, Daniel Handoko Santoso applied in class 25 related to clothing while PT Tekstil Industri Palekat applied in classes 24.

Due to the controversy over the trademark of CFW, Indigo Aditya Nugroho has withdrawn his application. There are 3 other applications left, the director urges the applicants to take the same action. “We hope this polemic will not continue in the future, the applicant better take the same measure as Indigo Aditya Nugroho to withdraw the application, so the process will not be prolonged,” said Razilu. The newest, Baim Wong has withdrawn his application as well.

With several parties applying for the same trademark, except PT Tekstil Industri Palekat applied for the label of Citayam only, Razilu is worried that the CFW trademark registration process will cause objections or lawsuits from other parties. As CFW seize great attention of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, the Authority has formed a special team to check the application of intellectual property rights associated with CFW.

Originally this phenomenon appeared spontaneously from the expression of young people, which further was being responded to by netizens. Hence, in his closing statement, Razilu suggested CFW should remain public property as it first appeared.
