Heaptalk, Jakarta — Sinar Mas-backed SM+, in collaboration with its joint venture partner, Korea Investment Real Asset Management (KIRA), has officially constructed SMX01, a data center in Jakarta’s Central Business District. Designed to be AI-ready and hyper-connected, this state-of-the-art facility aims to meet Southeast Asia’s growing demand for digital infrastructure.
“This flagship data center underscores our vision to create a secure, scalable, and globally integrated digital infrastructure. Alongside our 24 interconnected edge data centers across Indonesia, SMX01 will drive advanced technology adoption, reduce latency for end-users, and facilitate global business expansion.” President Director and CEO of SM+, Herson Suindah, said.
With an investment surpassing US$300 million, SMX01 is being developed in collaboration with LG Sinar Mas, the technology advisor and operator. LG Sinar Mas has extensive experience managing over 600 MW of data center capacity across Korea, ensuring the facility is built to the highest industry standards. Expected to become operational in the second half of 2026, SMX01 aims to support Southeast Asia’s digital economy, which is projected to reach US$1 trillion by 2030.
“Our investment in SMX01 reflects our confidence in Indonesia’s rapid digital transformation. We are excited to work alongside SM+ and LG Sinar Mas to establish a world-class data center that strengthens the region’s digital ecosystem,” CEO of KIRA, Yong Sik Kim, conveyed.
Specification and Scalability
SMX01 will feature 15,500 square meters of data hall white space, housing approximately 2,400 racks across nine data halls. Each hall is designed for up to 340 racks, offering flexibility for enterprise colocation, hyperscale cloud providers, and high-performance computing workloads, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning applications.
With an initial IT load capacity of 18 MW, scalable to 60 MW, SMX01 will integrate cutting-edge infrastructure, including:
- Support for ultra-high-density racks up to 130 kW per rack
- Advanced air and liquid cooling technologies for optimal energy efficiency
- Diverse fiber entry paths enabling multi-carrier connectivity from Indonesia’s leading internet providers
SMX01 strongly emphasizes sustainability, incorporating energy-efficient architecture to achieve a low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio. The facility will meet Tier IV standards and is expected to secure green building certification, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility.
Han Dong Hyup, CEO of LG Sinar Mas, noted, “This collaboration marks a significant step in Indonesia’s technological evolution. By combining our global expertise with SM+’s market leadership, we are setting new standards in data center innovation.”
