Heaptalk, Jakarta — Microsoft‘s giant multinational technology corporation has declared to end technical support and security on Windows 7 and 8.1. The company will perform this decision in the coming week, on January 10th, 2023.
Following this determination, this United States-based technology company will also launch Microsoft Edge 109 and WebView2 Runtime version 109, scheduled to establish on January 12th, 2023. While the system will continue to work on Windows 7 and 8, the version will not accept new features, future security updates, and bug maintenance. Microsoft Edge version 109 will also become the final version to support Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2.
Refers to the Lansweeper survey of 27 million Windows devices in October last year, the study disclosed many devices that operated Windows XP, 7, or 8, compared to Windows 11. As an effect, around 100 million users are estimated to upgrade their devices to avoid cyberattacks.
Simultaneously, Google Chrome plans to discontinue its support for Windows 7 and 8.1 efficiently on February 7th, 2023. However, Chrome version 109 will be the last version supporting these operating systems. For this reason, Google technology company expects Chrome’s users could upgrade to its latest Windows version to face a more convenient experience in exploring fruitful pieces of information.
Through this announcement, this giant technology company also prompted users to switch to a new device that supports a Windows 11 operating system, as the Windows 8.1 operating system would be more vulnerable to being infected with viruses, including malware and other cyber threats.
Furthermore, Microsoft 365 will no longer be sustained in Windows 8.1. Several applications of Microsoft Office, spanning Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, will stop receiving the latest security and software updates.
The company perceived this resolution is believed to grant safer security for people worldwide, as the Microsoft Management team admitted, “We also encourage developers to end support for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. We acknowledge that this may not be easy for several developers to do. However, ending support for these operating systems will help keep end users safe from potential security threats and risks.”
As additional information, Microsoft established Windows 7 in 2009, while the company launched Windows 8 in 2012. This technology company provided two contribution types towards these systems: mainstream and extended support.
As a result, this technology corporation stopped furnishing several contributions to Windows 7 officially ended on January 2015 for mainstream support. Meanwhile, the extended has been officially ceased on January 2020. Nevertheless, since a quarter of Windows installed in 2020 are Windows 7, Microsoft decided to afford extended support for three years, with additional costs.
On the other hand, this giant software company based in the United States has officially discontinued mainstream support for Windows 8 as of January 2018. The extended support will formally expire on January 10th, 2023.
