The remarkable growth on Threads is backed by the fact that the platform is tied to the popular social media network Instagram.
Heaptalk, Jakarta — Twitter rival message application Threads has attracted around 100 million users in only five days after its official launch on last Wednesday (07/05), exponentially surpassing ChatGPT’s record which hit the same numbers in two months after its launch.
The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, delivered in a Threads post, “Threads reached 100 million sign-ups over the weekend. That’s mostly organic demand, and we have not even turned on many promotions yet. I cannot believe it has only been five days!”
Even though the Threads platform has only been available for a week, this matter has already seized Twitter’s CEO Elon Musk’s attention, as the social media company is threatening legal action against Threads and accusing Meta of influencing ex-Twitter’s workforce and performing unlawful misappropriation of trade secrets to establish this new text-based conversations platform. Nevertheless, Meta has denied these allegations.
“Competition is fine; cheating is not,” said Musk on Twitter.
According to Similarweb, after Meta launched the threads platform a few days ago, Twitter’s web traffic fell by 11%, compared to the 4% decrease year-over-year as of June. Multiple internet traffic analysts underline the decline in Twitter usage as a risk that Meta poses to the pace of Twitter’s business.
In fact, the remarkable growth of Threads is backed by the fact that the platform is tied to the popular social media network Instagram. Users can sign up with their existing Instagram accounts and maintain several of their following as others sign up for the app.
However, this platform is in the infancy phase and has yet to launch in Europe because regulatory complexity to be navigated. Based on Instagram’s Head, Adam Mosseri, claimed the company is not explicitly trying to replace Twitter, and Meta will also not actively encourage politics and hard news on the platform. Still, the app could be the place for users for a conversation-based social media platform.
If Threads can retain its user base, this platform is estimated to solidify its position as a real competitor of Twitter, which disclosed its monetizable daily users number up to 238 million people in the last quarterly earnings report.
