Heaptalk, Jakarta — In an effort to bolster its cloud security amid the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and rising cyber threats, Google announced the acquisition of New York-based cloud security startup Wiz. (03/18)
According to Google’s official press release, the acquisition cost amounted to $32 billion, or approximately Rp525 trillion. This deal marks Google’s largest acquisition in history, surpassing its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola in 2012.
“Wiz will join Google Cloud, with the transaction expected to be finalized by 2026,” Google stated.
Wiz expressed enthusiasm about joining Google Cloud. In a blog post published the same day, the company noted that being under Google’s umbrella would allow it to innovate more rapidly than remaining independent. The startup also highlighted that Google allows competing platforms like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud to continue using Wiz’s services.
“This measure demonstrates Google’s commitment to maintaining flexibility for Wiz’s customers,” the company stated in its press release.
Additionally, Wiz shared insights into its decision to accept Google’s offer. According to Wiz co-founder Assaf Rapaport, regulatory concerns related to antitrust laws and investor interests played a significant role in the decision. Rapaport also dismissed speculation that Wiz was acquired due to financial struggles. Under his leadership, Wiz has grown rapidly, generating $100 million in annual revenue since its founding in 2020.
