Heaptalk, Jakarta – Jakarta-based exclusive hotel Mercure Ancol, made history by being one of the pioneers in eliminating plastic bottle use. To achieve this goal, the four-star hotel has employed Sweden technology called Drinking Water System to provide hygienic water to the guests.
Drinking water system utilizes Bluwater Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology, which generates hygienic clean water aligned with WHO standards. Performing the action, the hotel incorporated in the Accor group is predicted to remove over 500,000 single plastic bottle uses per year. This measure also is able to reduce carbon emission that is produced during the bottled water logistic process.
General Manager of Mercure Convention Centre Ancol, Sebastien Marty, during the media conference (10/28), conveyed, “The hotel has employed this system gradually, and today, based on the occupation rate, the execution has attained 85%. The hotel targets to boost the implementation up to 100% at the end of the year.”
For carrying out this new milestone, Marty has collaborated with PT Pran Indo Permata Abadi (abbreviation: PT PIPA), a company that specializes in this field. Marty added that the process to conduct this shifting is six months with a total investment value of Rp1 billion or USD64,300 (USD1 equals RP15,557).
The Representative of PT PIPA stated, “The process, normally, only takes two months, but this process took longer due to the pandemic condition. This investment value is Rp1 billion, but we should compare it to the cost we spend if we still use plastic bottles or galloon, which reach Rp800 million annually”.
Marty further said, “We could say that Return on Investment (ROI) is only one and half years to two years.”
Implementing new technology, Marty delivered challenge the hotel deals with, “In our previous estimation, we have prepared enough bottles. But, in the field, of course, there are several challenges appeared, one of which is the rotation of the bottle.”
”To address this challenge, we have ordered 1,500 additional bottles that will be delivered completely in November. As the pioneers, we keep carrying out trial and error, but we believe this is the way of the future,” said Marty in his closing statement.
