Heaptalk, Jakarta — An Indonesia-based technology company, Bukalapak, has continued to create a Fair Economy for All and reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia. In its implementation, the startup that performed IPO on august last year has cooperated with several parties, including DBS Indonesia Bank, WWF Indonesia, and PlasticPay.
In its collaboration with PlasticPay, Bukalapak has invited its partners, customer, and the public community to increase recycling behavior by exchanging their trashes through the dropbox of PlasticPay, which exists in Bukalapak’s store partners, to gain points.
As a result, the participants can utilize their collected points to execute transactions over stalls and store partners of Bukalapak. From this activity, the Bukalapak parties gathered more than 300kg of plastic waste and over 19,000 plastic bottles of trash.
As delivered by the CEO of PlasticPay, Suhendra Setiadi, during the Media Briefing (10/21), based on Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry data, around 72% of Indonesian society has contained a diminutive responsibility towards their consumption. Realizing this complex matter, he aims to switch people’s behavior through plastic waste recycling programs to be valuable products.
Regarding the Social pillar, this Indonesia’s e-commerce has embraced around 14.2 million MSME partners throughout Indonesia to transform their business and make their product quality equal to well-known brands. Through this action, the Bukalapak’s partners have enhanced their incomes up to three times since their early participation in this technology company ecosystem. On the other hand, as an additional backing to the MSMEs’ welfare, the team has also donated laptops devoted to women entrepreneurs and students to grow digital inclusion in the country.
Furthermore, through the collaboration and guidance of WWF Indonesia, Bukalapak has put endeavors to implement sustainable sourcing and waste reduction practices, particularly around the MSME players. WWF Indonesia would also share fruitful insight for MSMEs on how to sell sustainable products while retaining excellent quality to advance their businesses.
On the other hand, in collaboration with the DBS Indonesia Bank, Bukalapak has organized a More Sustainability Actions, Less Waste program. This action is a part of the Eat Without Leftovers campaign initiated by DBS Bank in 2020. Through this cooperation, Bukalapak has distributed around 1 ton of packaged food products, or nearly with the preventive measures of around 1.43 tons of CO2e emission, potentially generated if the product ends up as food waste.
While for the Governance pillar, Bukalapak focuses on creating an inclusive and convenient working environment dedicated to its employees. As a further company action, the Bukalapak team has also worked with Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (IBCWE) to hold a discussion and guidance program series with a mission to achieve gender equality in the working ecosystem.
This e-commerce has also initiated the #availABLE program, whereby Bukalapak is supported by DIFAlink and a Special Child Care Foundation (YPAS) to enhance the hiring of special needs. Through this initiative, Bukalapak has seized an award in the UN Women Asia Award for the Gender Responsive Marketplace category.
“We intend to broader the sustainable impact into the precious advantages for the next generations and the environment. I expect our programs and initiatives could amplify our intention to expedite the Sustainable Development Goals in the country,” concluded the President of Bukalapak, Teddy Oetomo.
