Heaptalk, Jakarta — The hospitality industry faces numerous challenges, including environmental awareness. One emerging trend is how hotels can effectively manage food waste.
The general manager of Novotel Tangerang said that daily food waste remains a significant issue, even though much of the food is still good quality and safe to eat. He mentioned that uneaten food is typical during breakfast, parties, and meetings, with many guests leaving buffet meals unfinished.
“As part of our commitment to environmental sustainability, we have implemented several programs and initiatives. One of these is the food waste reduction program,” Windiarto stated on Friday. (10/18)
To address this issue, Novotel Tangerang partnered with Surplus, a food rescue app that allows the hotel to offer unsold food at discounted prices to the public. Surplus users can enjoy meals starting at as little as Rp10,000 during breakfast hours.
Windiarto explained that the purchasing process is straightforward. Users must download the Surplus app from the Play Store or App Store, select the desired outlet, and browse the available menu. At Novotel Tangerang, breakfast is the only meal available through Surplus, with orders accepted between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM on weekdays or until 11:00 AM on weekends.
“We offer various international breakfast options that our guests can enjoy, including Indonesian breakfast, American breakfast, porridge, pastries, and bakery items. These are now available at very affordable prices,” he explained.
In addition to its food waste reduction initiative, Novotel Tangerang has undertaken several other eco-friendly actions. These include replacing all plastic products with environmentally friendly alternatives, such as straws, water bottles, soap, and shampoo packaging.
