Heaptalk, Jakarta — Electric car sales in Indonesia have grown significantly throughout early 2024. The Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) revealed that national wholesale sales of electric vehicles reached 9,729 units from January to May 2024, as reported by Kontan.
This figure represents a 109.68% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to the previous year’s period, which recorded only 4,640 units. According to Gaikindo Chairman Jongkie Sugiarto, the positive trend in electric car sales will continue in the coming months, supported by automotive exhibitions such as GIIAS 2024. Several new brands and models are also lined up to enter the Indonesian market.
“Affordable electric car products will definitely see increased sales,” Jongkie said, as quoted by Kontan (06/18). Consumers are also looking forward to the government and electric vehicle manufacturers’ more extensive development of charging stations.
Wuling became Indonesia’s best-selling electric car brand
Wuling Motors, a Chinese manufacturer, has emerged as the shining star in Indonesia’s electric car market. Its wholesale electric vehicle sales skyrocketed to 5,468 units from January to May 2024, marking a staggering 278.67% YoY increase compared to the previous period’s 1,444 units. Introducing new models, including the Airev, Binguo EV, and Cloud EV, fueled this remarkable growth. The Binguo EV, in particular, has been a game-changer, contributing to a significant portion of Wuling’s electric vehicle sales with 3,542 units sold by May 2024.
Wuling Motors’ Sales and Marketing Director, Dian Asmahani, is confident that Wuling’s sales will continue to rise. This confidence is supported by several factors, including the government’s provision of a 1% VAT incentive for all Wuling electric cars and the momentum gained from automotive exhibitions. “We also provide various benefits for consumers, such as ease of charging electric car batteries at home or in public places,” Dian said, as quoted by Kontan (06/18).
Meanwhile, Hyundai recorded wholesale electric vehicle sales of 526 units from January to May 2024, a decrease from the same period last year, which was 2,674 units. South Korean manufacturers have been affected by the increasingly fierce competition in the electric vehicle market.
PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia’s Chief Operating Officer, Fransiscus Soerjopranoto, is optimistic that Hyundai’s electric vehicle sales will soon rebound. This optimism is supported by the operation of Hyundai’s electric vehicle battery factory in Karawang, West Java.
