Heaptalk, Jakarta — The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo, issued the Publisher Rights Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 32 2024 concerning the Responsibilities of Digital Platform Companies to support quality journalism.
On the sidelines of the primary National Press Day (HPN) event, Jokowi explained that this Presidential Regulation was one of the government’s efforts to create a quality journalism industry and the sustainability of the conventional media industry in the country. Media companies can discover the regulation in detail by accessing the Cabinet Secretariat’s JDIH page.
“After a lengthy consideration, I finally signed the Presidential Regulation on the Responsibility of (Corporate) Digital Platforms to bolster quality journalism, generally known as the Presidential Decree on Publisher Rights,” affirmed the seventh Indonesian President.
In his further statement, Jokowi delivered that this policy has gone through an extensive consideration process to be approved, from arguments, differentiation in aspirations, consideration of implications, and encouragement from multiple parties.
“We have achieved multiple goals amid the robust urge of the Press Council as well as press companies and media association representatives that encouraged me to sign this Presidential Decree,” Jokowi added.
Through this regulation, he claimed the government intends to ensure more quality journalism in the country and the sustainability of the national media industry. The President also emphasized that this regulation will not affect the press exemption and control press content. He explained this Presidential Decree will focus on amplifying business relationships between press companies and digital platforms to improve quality journalism.
“We still need to anticipate the possible risks, particularly during the transition period in implementing this policy in terms of the digital platform and users responses,” the President said.
Furthermore, Indonesia’s government continues to discover adequate solutions and policies for the country’s media companies, one of which is instructing the Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, to prioritize advertisement spending devoted to the media companies.
“I have repeatedly mentioned that this regulation can be utilized as a short-term bearing. This point obviously will not solve the obstacles, but the press companies and parties must consider strategic ways to encounter this digital transformation,” affirmed Jokowi.
For content creators in Indonesia, the President emphasized that issuing the Presidential Decree on Publisher Rights will not apply to them. “Indonesia’s content creators can continue collaborating with digital platforms,” concluded Jokowi.
