Heaptalk, Jakarta — Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the government’s special attention this year to the welfare of online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers and couriers, particularly regarding providing holiday allowances (THR).
The government has urged app-based service companies to distribute cash Eid Al-Fitr holiday allowance to online drivers and couriers as a form of appreciation for their hard work. The bonus amount will be determined based on each worker’s level of activity and performance.
“This year, the government is paying special attention to online drivers and couriers who have significantly contributed to supporting transportation and logistics services in Indonesia. Regarding the amount and mechanism of the holiday bonus, it will be negotiated and later communicated by the Minister of Manpower through an official circular,” Prabowo added.
The holiday allowance policy is expected to provide tangible benefits for online drivers and couriers, enabling them to enjoy the Eid Al-Fitr holiday and the mudik—homecoming tradition in better conditions. The government hopes this initiative will improve the welfare of workers in the app-based transportation and logistics sector.
“With this policy, we hope that online drivers and couriers can celebrate the holiday, mudik, and Eid in a more comfortable state,” Prabowo stated.
For context, the number of workers in this sector is substantial, with approximately 250,000 active online drivers and couriers, and an additional 1 to 1.5 million part-time workers. This move underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of gig economy workers, who play a vital role in Indonesia’s digital economy. The policy aims to foster job satisfaction and economic stability for these essential workers by ensuring fair compensation during festive seasons.
