Heaptalk, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) continues to prevent and eradicate online gambling in the archipelago by focusing on monitoring transactions conducted through digital wallets or e-wallets.
Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi revealed that the transaction value of online gambling using e-wallets has reached an astonishing US$362 million, equal to Rp5.6 trillion.
“Indonesia’s government works tirelessly to prevent and eliminate online gambling. E-wallets usage are one of the new methods for these transactions, with a total value exceeding US$362 million.”
Minister Budi explained that his party had blocked about 573 e-wallet accounts, including 16 GoPay accounts, suspected of being involved in online gambling.
“GoPay, as a product of our nation, is expected to amplify the Know Your Customer (KYC) implementation system following personal data protection regulation,” he affirmed.
The Minister also appreciated GoTo for establishing a reporting channel for the public to flag any indication of digital services being used for online gambling. He urged that the Gambling Always Loses campaign continue to cut the issue and eventually promote a more productive, secure, and healthy digital landscape for Indonesian citizens.
“This public discussion and the reporting channel provision exemplify good cooperation. This effort is critical as the government needs contributions from diverse stakeholders to combat the issue,” he noted.
Since 2017, the Ministry has successfully blocked access to 4.7 million pieces of online gambling content. On the other hand, the Ministry has tackled 72,000 pieces of online gambling content embedded within government and educational websites.
Furthermore, the Ministry has submitted requests to the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to block about 7,599 bank accounts linked to this terrible activity. The Ministry has also opened several public reporting platforms, including the aduankonten.id, cekrekening. id, and aduannomor.id, to encourage public participation in this measure.
